Cord blood banking - an Australian experience: Identification of factors that affect post thaw stem cell viability and recovery.

Background

Cord blood collection at birth allows for future transplantation in the treatment of malignant and non-malignant diseases, cell-based therapies and transplantation. It is less controversial than the use of embryonic stem cells which involve the destruction of embryos.  Current methods used in collecting, transporting and storing cord blood stem cells, can contribute to a reduction in post-thaw stem cell viability. Understanding these factors will be of value for future stem cell use including ex-vivo expansion and stem cell therapy.

Study Aims

  • To identify current procedural factors that may affect post-thaw viability and CD34 (antibody marker) recovery.

  • Investigate ways to enhance stem cell viability by improving cryopreservation and thawing techniques.

  • Optimise current standard procedure for collecting, processing, transporting and storing cord blood stem cells.
